What Flowers Do I Need For My Wedding?

Flowers are something we all think about when it comes to organising a wedding - not only are they beautiful to look at, they create a whimsical, romantic aesthetic, perfect for saying ‘I do’ with your nearest and dearest. Here at MUD, we LOVE weddings - whether it’s minimal and classic or bright and bold, we love bringing each wedding brief to life and playing a part in such an exciting occasion.

We get that each couple is unique. Offering flexibility is super important to us - no two weddings are the same and we get that each couple will have different requirements. With build your own you can pick exactly what you need. Perhaps you don’t need a bridal bouquet and just want buttonholes or only table centres - there’s no right or wrong when it comes to wedding flowers. Our build your own package works for all weddings big or small.

Although most couples know that they want flowers at their wedding, they don’t always know which flowers they need. Whether you’ve just got engaged or you’ve been planning your wedding for a while, we’ve created a simple guide detailing the most popular wedding flowers. This is a rough guide that walks you through each type of floral arrangement so that you can pick what’s best for you on your special day.

And of course, if you’re looking for wedding flowers in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Central Scotland, please get in touch - we’d love to help you say ‘I do’.

Popular Flowers & Availability

When it comes to selecting your wedding flowers, the season can play a part in what’s available. Roses for example, can be sourced all year round whereas flowers like the peony are only available in early summer. Depending on your wedding date, be sure to factor in the availability of your flowers and do some research on what you can expect. When booking one of our wedding packages we always ask for your favourite flowers, least favourite flowers and colour palette, allowing us to create a bespoke bouquet inspired by your preferences.

Wedding Bouquets

Usually carried by the bride as she walks down the aisle or lovingly held by the bridesmaids during the wedding photoshoot, wedding bouquets are a staple in most weddings. Bouquets are often the first thing to be thought of when it comes to a wedding - guests are always excited to see what blooms the couple have chosen. They look gorgeous in the wedding photos and bring the wedding theme together with thoughtful styling and careful curated flower selection.

Bridal Bouquet

The bridal bouquet has to be on of the most important (and exciting) floral arrangements - it sets the tone for the day, standing out from all other bouquets. It is usually largest in size and features seasonal blooms with colour co-ordinated trailing ribbon or a traditional bind.

Bridesmaid Bouquet

The bridesmaid bouquet is often a smaller version of the bridal bouquet, featuring the same style and colour palette - these look amazing in photographs and compliment the bride perfectly.

Flower Girl Bouquet

Flower girl bouquets are usually carried by the little ones (definitely an ‘awwww’ moment & very cute!), they are usually smaller than the bridesmaid bouquets yet visually similar in style and theme.

Corsage / Button Holes (Boutonnieres)

These are smaller floral details that compliment the bouquets. Whilst bouquets are more of a statement, corsages are smaller bundles of flowers that can be tied around the wrist of the wearer. Buttonholes or pin-on corsages are similar, except they are usually single flowers, perfect for accessorising a suit. They are usually worn by family and VIP’s during the wedding, they add that little something extra to make the guest stand out.

Button Holes (Boutonnieres)

A pin-on, single flower that matches the bridal bouquet in style and colour palette. They are the perfect way to extend the wedding theme in small ways and identify the wedding party. The look great on suits or as accessories for those who are playing a part in your day.

Typically worn by: The Groom, Groomsmen, Usher, Father(s)/Grandfather(s) of the bride and groom.

Wrist Coursage

A wrist corsage is similar to the pin-on corsage, however, it is created using organza ribbon to tie round your wrist. These look beautiful throughout the day and help identify the wedding party - they are also a beautiful floral element that can be taken home by the guest at the end of the day, the perfect reminder of your special day.

Typically worn by: Mother(s)/Grandmother(s) of the bride and groom.

Floral Wedding Decor

Flowers go beyond bouquets, floral decor is the perfect way to add beautiful detail throughout your big day. In addition to using flowers as accessories, flowers are perfect for decorating your venue and bringing a beautiful, romantic aesthetic to your wedding day. Adding floral decor throughout will transform your venue and add your personal touch in the loveliest way.

Ceremony Arrangements

Ceremony arrangements are flowers that you can place around your venue or at the ceremony alter/space. They are styled with seasonal blooms and placed within a vessel, meaning you can take them home or giveaway as a gift after the wedding.

Table Centres

Often created in a footed urn, these free form style floral arrangements are created with seasonal blooms in your chosen colour palette. They are the perfect way to decorate your tables and create a welcoming, bright and beautiful atmosphere to celebrate your day.

Cake Toppers

The cake is a prominent feature at any wedding and what better way to decorate than with beautiful blooms? The cake topper matches the wedding theme and can be perfectly placed on the top of your wedding cake.

Floral Extras

These are little extra details that make for the perfect addition to your big day. You can never have too many flowers and so these additional touches bring that extra magic.

Floral Hair Combs

Created on a small clear plastic comb using seasonal blooms in your chosen colour palette, the floral hair comb is a beautiful addition to any wedding outfit. Whether it’s a special touch for the bride or a gift to the bridesmaids, the floral comb is a lovely and elegant detail that looks gorgeous every time.

Thank You Bouquets

Why not thank your wedding party with a beautiful bouquet of blooms? A thank you bouquet is the perfect gift, reminding the receiver of the amazing time they’ve had at your wedding for days to come.

Throw Bouquet

Now this is optional, but many brides purchase a secondary bouquet to throw to the guests during the evening do. It’s a fun way to end the night and means you can keep your lovely main bouquet as a keepsake.
